Vaikundam Legacy was built on the lands of the Vaikundam Estate, one of the first rubber Estates, in the year 1929 , by the Europeans. Traditionally these lands were the property of the Maharaja of Travancore and were given as small holdings to local chieftains. In the early 20th century, Sir Daniel Mackianon Hamilton bought these small holdings from the chieftains and started cultivation by planting rubber, coconut etc. In 1924, Captain Thomas Patrick Madden Alexander along with two other British gentlemen, William Coombe and Reginald Garnier, bought the estate from Sir Daniel Hamilton. The concept of rubber plantations was introduced by them. The estate then changed hands a few times and finally in 1957, Sri Seshadrinatha Sarma took over the reins of the estate. Since then the estate has been owned and run by a single family, passed on from one generation to the next.
And, on the estate nestled deep inside the trees stands Vaikundam Legacy, a building envisaged and built by the Europeans which in the later days became the home of Sri Sarma. It was he who gave the majestic structure a graceful traditional touch. Vaikundam Legacy, with a blend of both British and Indian history, has continued to be a home to the family. His children have added to it and then his grandchildren…… and named it rightly 'Legacy' in honour of their heritage.
